Thania Gonzalez Q&A
Beauty babe Thania Gonzalez is well known in the YouTube world for her in-depth beauty tutorials and I-want-her-look looks. She recently took over our Instagram page to pass on a few tips, and while she was there we got to chat with her about how she got to where she is today (not to mention her most favorite lashes)! Her down-to-earth responses are a reason she’s one of our absolute faves!
How did you first get into makeup? What do you remember about it from when you were a kid?
I was first introduced to makeup by my mom. She would put it on in front of me and I would always ask questions. It soon turned into a way we bonded and had fun together. I obviously wouldn’t wear it out of the house as a kid but my mom let me play in it and played with me. When I got older, her and I would and still go makeup shopping together as a fun hobby.
What made you want to start a YouTube channel? Did you ever imagine it would take off like it has?
The reason I started my YouTube channel goes a little deeper than my love for the beauty industry. I have always wanted to help and inspire women in some way. Growing up I went through domestic violence and abuse. A topic like that is very touchy and those who haven’t experienced it have a hard time understanding it. I started my channel to create a place where I could express my creativity, but most importantly to use as an escape from a few hard times. I also want to someday inspire and help battered women and children that are victims of domestic abuse.
I honestly never imagined it would take off the way it did. But I am so grateful for everyone who has came across my channel and given me the opportunity to influence and inspire them.
What’s your advice to anyone wanting to start their own beauty vlog and social channels?
My honest advice is to do everything you want to do and follow your dreams so long as you are doing it with a genuine purpose and a lot of love.
When it comes to fashion and makeup, who inspires you most and why?
Someone who truly inspires me in the beauty industry is Kandee Johnson. She is one of the few people I can relate to because she has stuck with her dreams and her YouTube channel through many hard times. She’s genuine and honest when it comes to life and her channel.
What is it that draws you to iENVY lashes? What makes them stand out from the rest?
The #1 thing that draws me in is the quality. I think quality is so much more important than quantity. I have found myself using one pair of iEnvy V-LUXE lashes over 20 times. And that, to me, is gold. It isn’t easy finding good quality lashes that last. And this is speaking for both higher end and inexpensive lashes.
What tips do you have for someone who’s never used false lashes before?
My best tip is to not give up. Wearing lashes is like breaking in new shoes. You have to give them a few wears and tries in order to get used to them and get the hang of putting them on.
Besides lashes, what are 5 beauty products you simply cannot live without?
A good lipstick, foundation, mascara, bronzer, and blush. I love my complexion products!
What’s the most surprising thing that has ever come from having such a big following? Do you often get recognized and stopped when you go out?
The most surprising thing that has came from having a following has to be the fact that this is my job. I never imagined I’d be doing this for a living. I actually attended college for two years before my channel took off.
I definitely get recognized in the malls where I live quite a bit. I have a pretty large Texas-based following. It’s always so humbling saying “hi” to my viewers in person.
What is one trend right now that you LOVE?
A makeup trend I love at this moment is definitely the softer contour and natural complexion. I love skin that looks flawless but still looks like skin.
What about one that you wish you just go away?
A trend that has got to go (and I think we all agree)… wavy brows!
When you’re not done up from your makeup tutorials, what does your daily skin and makeup routine consist of?
Honestly, foundation, bronzer, blush, highlight, mascara, small lashes, and gloss. I keep it super simple on a daily. I only wear eyeshadow if I am doing a video or have something important to attend.
And I’m going to be honest… half the time I don’t wear makeup!
When it comes to make up, what do you see a lot of girls doing wrong and what are your tips for fixing it?
I see a lot of girls still struggling with brows. I think brows have a lot to do with using the right product for your specific needs – especially if you aren’t very experienced with using brow products. Knowing how to apply your certain products is important. Less is more when it comes to brows!
If you could do make up for any celebrity, who would it be and why?
Drew Barrymore. I met her at Beautycon in New York city last year and she was the sweetest, most down to earth person! And her cosmetics line is amazing.
What are you dressing up as for Halloween this year, and how will you be doing your make up and lashes to match?
I want to be Princess Jasmine this year. My boyfriend always says I look like her and he’s going to be Aladdin! I will definitely be wearing some dramatic V-LUXE lashes to make my eyes look big like a Disney princess. Probably V-LUXE Malia. They have that dramatic look to them but still make the eyes look so open.
